My friend, Hugh, has always been fat, but things got so bad recently that he decided to go on a diet.
我的朋友休一直都很胖，不过近来情况糟到了他决定节食的地步。
things got so bad that... 是“情况变得如此糟糕以至于……”；go on a diet 表示“开始节食”。
He began his diet a week ago.

begin one's diet 是节食主题高频表达。
First of all, he wrote out a long list of all the foods which were forbidden.
首先，他把所有禁止吃的食物都开成了一张长长的单子。
First of all 用于列举第一步；write out 表示“写出、开列”；which were forbidden 是定语从句。
The list included most of the things Hugh loves: butter, potatoes, rice, beer, milk, chocolate, and sweets.
这张单子里列出的，偏偏大多都是休爱吃的东西：黄油、土豆、米饭、啤酒、牛奶、巧克力和糖果。
include 表示“包括”；冒号后面是具体列举；most of the things Hugh loves 点出幽默效果。
Yesterday I paid him a visit.
昨天我去看了他。
pay sb. a visit 是固定搭配，意为“拜访某人”。
I rang the bell and was not surprised to see that Hugh was still as fat as ever.

He led me into his room and hurriedly hid a large parcel under his desk.

It was obvious that he was very embarrassed.

When I asked him what he was doing, he smiled guiltily and then put the parcel on the desk.
我问他在干什么时，他心虚地笑了笑，然后把那个包裹放到了桌上。
what he was doing 是宾语从句；smiled guiltily 表示“带着内疚地笑”。
He explained that his diet was so strict that he had to reward himself occasionally.

so...that... 表示“如此……以至于……”；reward himself occasionally 是反讽核心表达。
Then he showed me the contents of the parcel.
接着他让我看那个包裹里的东西。
contents of the parcel 表示“包裹里的内容物”。
It contained five large bars of chocolate and three bags of sweets!
